Lighting:
Describe the lighting in the shot. Where is the light coming from? How is it falling on the models face/head/body?Describe the shadows that are created in the photo.
- In Photo #3, the light is coming directly from the right side of the photo and the left side of my good friend Cody who is the model in the photo. The right side of his face is lit up and the left side is darker. Shadows are shown on his whole left side of his body because the light is coming from the right.
Position of the Model:
How is the model situated? Is the photo a head shot, or did you include more of the torso? Is the model facing the camera, looking to the side, tilting their head…
- The model, who is Cody, is directly facing the camera making it a head shot. Some of his body is showing on the bottom which is his white sweatshirt.
Position of the Camera/Composition:
Did you take a horizontal or vertical photo? What was your point of view? Did you shoot from above, below, from the side or on an angle? How close or far were you from the model?
- The photo was taken horizontally and the point of view is directly in front of the model who is sitting down in the photo. I was fairly close to the model in the photo.
Impact/Expression:
What does the lighting, position of model and expression on face communicate? What aspect of the model’s personality is being revealed in the portrait? (serious, humorous, sad, anxious…)
- The model, Cody, is more serious in this portrait although he is very humorous.
Compare and contrast:
Compare the photo to another with a different impact/viewer response. How did you use different lighting, positioning or expression to communicate a different feeling?
- Comparing photo #3 with photo #6, they are very different with few similarities. Cody was still sitting down in the photo but one is with color and the other is in black and white. Both of the photos have the light coming from the right side of the photo but one is more serious while the other is very humorous.
